Launching the state-wide Shala Pravesh Utsav (school enrolment) campaign in remote villages of border district of Banaskantha, Chief Minister Narendra Modi said the primary school dropout rate has sharply decreased from 40 per cent to two per cent.

Modi Serve Food to Childerns This year, the school enrolment drive has been clubbed with Kanya Kelavani (special enrolment drive for girls). Starting from Suigam, Rupanivas, Koreti and Mamana villages in Vav taluka of Banaskantha district, the villagers as well as Border Security Force (BSF) jawans have joined hands for the programme.

Modi distributed Vidhya Lakshmi Bond, education kit and toys to children enrolled in schools here. He also distributed prizes like notebook, pencil, eraser, to toppers of standard 1 to 3. Modi sat in bullock kart at Koreti village, where he was welcomed by the villagers. The children presented ‘tree-story’ at each village that the Chief Minister visited. The ‘tree-story’ experiment evokes environment awareness among children. The public meeting was conducted by children only at schools.

Modi catered nutritious mid-day meal to children himself and sat with the children in a row for lunch. Modi said, “this government spent a decade in correcting the things, such as primary education enrollment. Prior to year 2009, 40 out of 100 children used to leave the schools. The figure has come down to two now.”

Asking the villagers to help eradicate illiteracy, Modi said that one lakh ‘vidya sahayaks’ have been appointed, 64,000 classrooms, 50,342 toilets and drinking water facilities have been added to 32,000 schools in the last 10 years. This year, he added, around 10,000 ‘vidya sahayaks’ have been appointed for teaching English, Mathematics and Science in 5,000 primary schools across the state.

"Ironically, the Gadhvi community members are called the children of Goddess of knowledge Saraswati," Modi said, while addressing the crowd. "It’s shameful that 98 per cent girls in these villages are not availing schooling facility."

Speaking in a local dialect Modi said, "I have not come here as a chief minister or not even as a common man. I am a beggar and have come to seek your promise to educate your girls."
