Chief minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday decided not to hand over the crucial home portfolio, which was handled by Amit Shah , to any other minister of state.
Modi has kept the portfolio entirely to himself at this critical juncture. "He has decided to keep home with himself for the time being, hoping that the crisis arising out of Shah’s arrest blow over," a senior bureaucrat in the CM’s office said.
Other departments handled by Shah were distributed among three ministers. Finance minister Vajubhai Vala has been given additional charge of transport.
Another cabinet minister, Dilip Sanghani, a Modi protégé, has been given additional charge of legal affairs, judiciary, parliamentary affairs and jails. Sanghani currently handles agriculture and cooperatives portfolios. The prohibition and excise department has been given to minister of state for water supply, cooperation, health and family affairs, Parbat Patel. Patel also gets other portfolios of police housing, border security, civil defence, jail, law, judiciary and parliamentary affairs — all as minister of state.
