Forbes Magazine names Ahmedabad an Emerging Global Powerhouse

October 16, 2010 · 3 comments

Forbes Magazine has launched a list of The World’s Fastest-Growing Cities with a focus on the global emerging powerhouses. Forbes has named three of India’s cities: Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai as best positioned to prosper and grow in this new age of urbanisation.

Forbes magazine called Gujarat the "most market-oriented and business-friendly" among Indian states. The analysis noted that Gujarat’s policies helped lure away the new Tata Nano plant from West Bengal to Sanand, 30 km from Ahmedabad. Forbes acknowledged Ahmedabad as one of India’s rising urban centres “whose per-capita incomes are twice that of the rest of India”.

The Forbes Magazine cites one Indian academic, Sudha Menon, as comparing Gujarat – which has developed infrastructure more quickly than its domestic rivals – with the success of Singapore and Malaysia.

Ahmedabad houses chemicals, pharmaceuticals and textiles companies and boasts of a thriving information technology industry. Numerous foreign companies have set up bases in and around the city.

The last decade has seen Ahmedabad transformed to world-class urban modernity. The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) started in 2009, has won the USA International Sustainable Transport Award. Flyovers have bypassed congestion and the Riverfront Development project will soon open the city’s best green land for public use.

The McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) has estimated India’s cities will soon house 40% of the country’s population and will generate 70% of new job opportunities. This is a vital time for Indian cities to follow Ahmedabad’s success to win business from centres in China, USA and Europe.

IT IS REMARKABLE TO SEE GROWTH OF GUJ & CITY OF AHMEDABAD. READING BETWEEN THE LINES, THE BEAUTY OF “A” CITY DEVELOPMENT IS NOT HAPHAZARD CRAZY DEVELOPMENT LIKE MANY OTHER INDIAN & WORLD CITIES.
IMPORTANT FACTORS TO BE NOTED:

1.REAL ESTATE PRICE IN AHMEDABAD IS VERY AFFORDABLE FOR EVEN MIDDLE CLASS CITIZENS, IN THE HEART OF CITY.
2.LENGTH & BREADTH OF CITY CAN BE COVERED IN ABOUT 35 TO 45 MINUTES.THIS IS A GREAT BOON TO ALL CITY DWELLERS, INSTEAD OF WASTING 3 TO 4 HRS IN THE TRAFFIC.
3.LESS POLLUTION. CITY PLANNING WILL SLOWLY MAKE MORE PEOPLE USE CONVINIENT,CLEAN EFFICIENT WELL DEVELOPED PUBLIC TRANSPORT.
MOST IMPORTANT:
1.FORBES MAGAZINE SHLD HAVE HIGHLIGHTED THE FACT “A” CITY HAS ONE OF THE BEST BALANCED GROWTH, & AT WELL AFFORDABLE COST FOR ALMOST ALL ITS CITIZENS. THAT IS THE LIVABLE “HUMAN INDEX” IS MUCH BETTER THAN ALL OTHER CITIES IN INDIA.

2.GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT CANNOT BE TALKED IN ISOLATION IN MONEY TERMS, OR AS SOME %. IN OTHER WORDS ASPECTS LIKE “VALUE FOR MONEY, AFFORDABILITY, OF PROPERTY & GOODS WHEN COMPARED TO EARNINGS, HEALTHY STANDARD OF LIVING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY, SLUMS WITHIN CITY ,FREE OF TERROR,CRIME ETC ,PERHAPS ON ALL THESE ASPECTS “A”CITY SCORES OVER MANYOTHER CITIES IN THE WORLD.
3.AT THE SAME TIME ITS GDP & ECONOMIC GROWTH IS ALSO CONTINUING, WITHOUT AFFECTING QUALITY OF LIFE.

I DO HOPE AS AN INDIAN MANY OTHER CITIES IN INDIA FOLLOW THIS GREAT EXAMPLE OF AHMEDABAD.
