Developed Gujarat to strengthen India’s image as a superpower: Modi

May 3, 2010 · 8 comments

Chief Minister Narendra Modi has called upon all the stakeholders involved in the progress of the nation to ensure Gujarat’s development and take advantage of the opportunities presented by the state as it will further help strengthening India’s image as a rising superpower in the world.

”The development of Gujarat will not only help the people of the state but will help building India’s image a developed nation,” Mr Modi said yesterday while addressing a jam packed Sardar Patel Stadium, where the main function of Gujarat’s golden jubilee celebration (Swarnim Gujarat) was being held.

Mr Modi also asked the concerned parties to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the state in the field of power, energy and other sectors.

Announcing a series of goodies, the Chief Minister also has increased the Dearness Allowance (DA) for Gujarat Government employees by 8 per cent from the existing 27 to 35 per cent with effect from January 1, 2010.

”The move will benefit about 4.91 lakh employees and 3.25 lakh pensioners, costing the state exchequer additional Rs 687 crore and Rs 247 crore respectively, totalling Rs 934 crore,” a government official informed.

The BJP leader also laid down the foundation stone for a Rs 100 crore ‘Mahatma Mandir’ as a unique memorial for the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.

The memorial, a museum as well as a convention centre, will come up on 34 acre of land near the Gandhinagar Railway Station.

The main function of the day ‘Garvi Gujarat’ kicked off in the evening at 1930 hrs in the Sardar Patel Stadium with a display of fireworks and was followed by the story of Gujarat from pre historic era , through the time of Siddhraj Jaisingh, Sultan Ahmed Shah, the landing of Parsis at Sanjan and the Separation from Bombay state to become a seperate entity in 1960.

There were at least 20,000 participants from across the country doing the enactment of the state’ rich history.

However, the police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse surging crowd at the entrance of the stadium.

All entry gates were closed nearly two hours before the commencement of the programme. Those who ventured to come closer to the VVIP gate were forcibly dispersed with the Special Reserve Force personnel wielding lathis.

The lathis-wielding police personnel caused near stampede at gate number one, trapping few couples and some journalists.

Even journalists holding card passes were not allowed to enter before 1800 hrs, though the function was to start at 1930 hrs.

The irate mob torn away their passes and also attempted to uproot the welcome arch erected near gate number two.

Though the stadium, renovated at a cost of Rs five crore, has a capacity of 40,000, more than two lakh people with entry passes had gathered there.

I agree – traffic sence within Indias is level zero. In USA and other developed countries, people follow: “DRIVING IS A RIGHT, IT IS A PRIVILEGE”. Where as in India people are exactly in the opposite state of mind. That is very very disheartening and shameful. We are not even underdeveloped, we are undeveloped to the point where human safety and human life is not valued at all. If the human improvement index is of concern to this government, then road driving conditions need to be improved drastically. Stringent enforcement and proper driving education and plain human courtesy is a must be striven for as urgently as possible.

Also, to make it more organized, we can start with all of the major cities in Gujarat to have street signs so that addresses can be given as in developed nations. This should then be followed up by going to the next tier cites and so on. Development also means organization of society to make living less stressful and more enjoyable.
