No less than 5,260 babies have been delivered in ambulances of 108 emergency services. In reply to a question, health and family welfare
minister Jay Narayan Vyas said that 6.76 lakh medical emergencies were handled by the emergency medical services. On August 29, 2007, Gujarat Emergency Management and Research Institute was inaugurated by CM Narendra Modi and former president APJ Abdul Kalam with just 14 ambulances, now there are 402.
He said, on an average 2,212 medical emergencies are attended to daily and inmost cases response time was less then five seconds. Once the call was received, it was attended to in 14 minutes and in 26 minutes the victim was shifted to the nearest hospital.
In reply to a query about the expenditure, he said that Rs 22.09 crore was spent in 2007-’08, while in 2008-’09 it grew to Rs 66.41 crore and in April and May 2009 the expenditure incurred was Rs 12.47 crore.
